Romania sees huge gap in road infrastructure money allocation

28 April 2016

Romania’s western region of Transylvania, one of the country’s economic growth poles, received last year some EUR 447 million for road infrastructure, according to the National Highways Company.

This represented about 46% of the total budget allocated for this segment, reports local Ziarul Financiar. In total, the north-western part of Romania received about EUR 828 million last year.

At the opposite end, the eastern area of Moldova received only some EUR 49 million for road infrastructure. Moldova is a region with very low investment rates.

In total, the Moldova and Bucovina areas were allocated almost EUR 82.8 million for roads.

The gap between the investments in road infrastructure in Transylvania and Moldova will lead to differences in their economic development, said economic analyst Dragos Cabat. The western area has attracted big investment from automotive producers such as Continental, Schaeffler, Daimler, and Hella.
