Romania sees fewest new firms with foreign capital in 2015

The number of new companies with foreign shareholders registered in Romania in 2015 was the lowest in the last 18 years while the new capital foreign investors brought into local companies last year reached the minimum of the last 12 years, according to data from Romania’s Trade Registry Office – ONRC.

Foreign investors only registered 5,831 new companies in Romania in 2015, down from 6,219 in 2014.

In the last 25 years, the number of new companies established by foreign investors in Romania varied from a minimum of 3,400, in 1995, to a maximum of over 15,000, in 2007.

The value of net capital brought by foreign investors to their companies in Romania also dropped in 2015, to EUR 1.24 billion. In 2014, the level was EUR 3.88 billion, very close to the all-time high reached in 2007, of almost EUR 4 billion.

Last year was also the first time since 2003 when new foreign capital inflows went under EUR 2 billion.

The total number of companies with foreign shareholders in Romania was little over 205,000 and their total capital was close to EUR 43 billion, as of February 29, 2016.
