Romania, secondary transit route for ISIS foreign fighters

16 August 2016

Romania remains a secondary transit route for foreign fighters going from Europe to Syria and Iraq to join the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist group, said the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI).

Such radicalized persons haven’t yet been identified in Romania. However, they use the country as a secondary route on their way to Syria and Iraq, reports local Digi24. SRI has identified specific situations of foreign fighters trying to transit or enter the country.

Of the 31,000 foreign fighters that have joined the Islamic State, about 6,000 are Europeans. The US-backed coalition has destroyed 143 tanks, 328 fighting cars, 6,500 buildings, and over 7,000 combat positions belonging to ISIS since August 2014. The military campaign against ISIS has cost over USD 8 billion so far.
