Romania risks EUR 1 bln fines if it refuses to accept refugees

04 May 2016

The EU member states that refuse to take in refugees based on the agreed quotas could be fined EUR 250,000 per refugee, according to a draft project that may be published today by the European Commission, writes the Financial Times.

Romania needs to take in 4,180 refugees this year and next year, based on the quotas agreed by the EU leaders in 2015. The refugees are currently hosted in Greece and Italy. Romania could thus pay a fine of over EUR 1 billion if it refuses to accept refugees.

In March, Romania took over 15 people that come from Syria and Yemen.

The EU has agreed so far on the relocation of only 160,000 refugees.
