Romania will start reconstruction of football stadiums for UEFA 2020 next year

28 July 2016

Romania will start the reconstruction of the Steaua, Dinamo, Rapid football stadiums and the Arcul de Triumf rugby stadium next year, said deputy prime minister Vasile Dincu.

The projects are necessary for the UEFA European Football Championship in 2020. Romania’s capital Bucharest will host four football matches during the competition but only if it refurbishes the stadiums and meets other conditions.

The Government plans to complete the feasibility studies for the four stadiums this fall. The Steaua stadium will have 30,000 seats, Dinamo will have 25,000, Rapid will have between 15,000 and 18,000 whereas the Arcul de Triumf rugby stadium will have between 8,000 and 12,000 seats.

Bucharest’s biggest stadium is the National Arena, with a capacity of over 55,000 seats. The stadium was inaugurated in September 2011 after a EUR 234 million investment. It hosted the UEFA Europa League final in May 2012.
