Romania raises only 5% of the money for Brancusi sculpture in two months

18 July 2016

Romania’s Government has managed to raise little over EUR 306,000 by mid-July within the fundraising campaign organized to buy Constantin Brancusi’s famous sculpture Wisdom of the Earth (Cumintenia Pamantului). The campaign officially started on May 19.

The Government needs to raise EUR 6 million by end-September to have the entire amount required to buy the sculpture from its current owners. It has agreed to pay EUR 11 million for the sculpture, EUR 5 million of which will come from the state.

Romanians have donated EUR 165,868 by wiring money into the Ministry of Culture’s accounts, EUR 104,222 via the campaign’s website, and EUR 36,683 via eMAG.ro, according to information posted on Cumintenia Pamantului Facebook page.

Those who want to contribute to the Romanian state’s efforts to buy the Brancusi sculpture can make donations on the campaign’s website, and by wiring money into several bank accounts. They can also donate on eMAG.ro, the largest online retailer in the local market. Donations come with tax exemptions and, if the campaign is unsuccessful, each contributor will receive the donated money back.
