Romanian authorities may restrict electricity consumption

13 January 2017

Romania’s Government has drafted a decision that allows authorities to restrict electricity consumption and cancel electricity exports.

The measure will not affect households, and will be applied only to some industrial consumers by restricting consumption to a minimum technological power, the authorities said, reports local Economica.net.

On January 11, electricity carrier Transelectrica notified the Energy Ministry on an imminent crisis in the operation of the National Energy System (SEN). Weather forecasts indicate a further period of severe weather between January 17 and January 20. Romania is confronted with an electricity deficit in this period due to the lower level of the Danube, which has reduced the production of the big hydro power plants Portile de Fier I and II, according to Transelectrica.

In the last days, Romania has seen historic records in the levels of gas and electricity consumption.
