Romania increases public employees’ wages

07 April 2016

The salaries of more than half of the Romanian public employees will increase by 5% on average starting August 1, said the Government spokesperson Dan Suciu.

The social workers will benefit from the highest wage increase, of 20%, reports local Mediafax. The Government’s measure targeted the public employees with lower revenues.

The minimum wage will also increase to RON 1,250 (EUR 280) starting May 1, Suciu added.

The salary increases will be covered from the dividends the Government expects to receive from the state-owned companies. The Government considers changing the mandatory quota of dividends that the state-owned companies need to distribute to their shareholders, from the current level of 50% to 75% of the net profits.

Gas producer Romgaz, electricity distributor Electrica, and power producer Hidroelectrica are some of the most profitable state companies
