Romania has no investment project approved in the Juncker plan

21 April 2016

The European Fund for Strategic Investment (FEIS) hasn’t approved any of the projects Romania has submitted to be financed by the European Commission based on the Juncker plan.

The plan, which has been named after Jean Claude Juncker – the European Commission’s President, aims to mobilize EUR 315 billion worth of investments in the European Union.

Romania is one of only three EU member states that haven’t managed to get any project approved within the Juncker plan, according to Finance Ministry officials. There are over 220 projects already approved by the FEIS in 25 of the 28 member states.

The Juncker plan is based on EUR 21 billion guarantees provided by the European Union and the European Investment Bank (EIB). The projects accepted within this program get EU guarantees which help them access loans. Romania has had problems in creating a bankable project to qualify for this program.

The Juncker plan may help boost Romania’s GDP by almost 1 percentage point in the first year, in a pessimist scenario, and by 4.75 pp, in an optimist scenario.
