More people cross Romanian borders this Easter

03 May 2016

The number of people who crossed the Romanian borders, either entering or exiting the country, increased this year on Easter over the same holiday last year.

Over 634,000 people crossed the Romanian borders during this year’s Orthodox Easter holiday (April 29 – May 2), 50% more than last year, according to data from the Romanian Border Police. Less than half a million people - 423,000 - crossed the Romanian borders in the same period of 2015.

Of this year’s total, 336,000 people went out of the country and 298,500 entered Romania, the data shows.

The busiest crossing points were at the Romanian-Hungarian border (over 251,000 people) and the Romanian-Bulgarian border (100,000 people).

“High levels of traffic were also registered at the airport checkpoints, where about 151,000 people have crossed the border,” reads the Romanian Border Police’s statement.

Considering the high number of people who crossed the border this Easter, the Border Police also increased the number of staff, with 3,000 border police officers conducting daily surveillance and control.

The Romanian Border Police has also improved the mobile app Trafic Online, available on politiadefrontiera.ro, via which people can find out information about the checkpoints and the average waiting time to cross the Romanian border.
