New law allows retailers in Romania to give cash to clients who pay by card

11 May 2016

A new law allows retailers in Romania to also give cash to clients who pay for their purchases by debit card. Romania’s Parliament passed the bill on Tuesday, May 11, and sent it to President Klaus Iohannis, who has to sign it.

Once enforced, the cashback will law allow any retailer that has a turnover of over EUR 10,000 per year to give cash to its clients, if they ask for it when making card purchases. The retailers will get commissions for these cashback operations, the same as banks do when clients withdraw cash from their ATMs.

The law may prove useful especially in the rural areas, where there are few ATMs. The maximum cash amount that a client can get from stores is RON 200 (EUR 45).

According to the law, the retailers can give cash even to clients who don’t purchase anything from their stores.
