27 July 2016

Italian cable producer Prysmian has expanded its telecom cable factories in Romania and Slovakia due to the rapid evolution of the telecom sector and the constant emergence of new players.

Once the expansion is completed at the beginning of next year, the factories will be the largest in Europe in their category, according to the company.

“The plants are built as extensions of the existing factories that are located in Slatina, Romania, and Presov, Slovakia, and will be inaugurated in the coming months,” reads a company press release.

The factory in Slatina started producing energy cables in 1973. In 2009 it put out on the market fiber optics cables for telecom networks. The unit can produce 4.5 million fiber kilometers (fkm) of cables per year. Following the EUR 22 million investment in expansion, the plant will have a capacity of 8 million fkm of cables per year.

The investment in the factory in Slovakia amounts to EUR 21 million.

Prysmian Romania had sales of EUR 152 million and a net profit of EUR 3.8 million in 2015. The company had 283 employees, according to official data from the Finance Ministry.
