Project: Former factories to be turned into residential areas in Romania

21 June 2016

The Romanian Government aims to transform the former factories that are now abandoned, including railway stations and former military units from over 150 towns across the country, into residential neighborhoods and public spaces, according to the Territorial Development Strategy.

The strategy needs to be approved by the end of July. The cities where the transformations should take place include Cluj-Napoca, Baia Mare, Hunedoara, and Miercurea Ciuc, reports local Capital.ro.

“Even if the housing construction sector is evolving, there is a large discrepancy in terms of the urban population’s income. There is still a young population with relatively low income that can’t access housing, as well as a disadvantaged population with a low participation in the labor market,” according to the project drafted by the Development Ministry.

The increasing urbanization is one of the main strands of the strategy, which should be implemented over the next 20 years. The strategy involves the allocation of land plots for the construction of private housing in urban areas.
