PM: Romania could help establish a regional grain market

27 April 2016

Romania could play a significant role in establishing a regional grain market, together with Hungary, Ukraine, Moldova, and Bulgaria, said Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos.

Romania has an important production resource, with its 13 million hectares of agricultural land, which are still far from being used to their full potential. Romania has a lower level of productivity in agriculture compared to other EU countries, but this could change if investments in technology and processing are made, Ciolos added.

The country needs to think in regional terms, because it’s not enough to produce important quantities. A country needs to have outlet markets and the capacity to negotiate prices.
