Plagiarism verdict against former Romanian PM stands

28 July 2016

Romania’s former Prime Minister Victor Ponta remains with the plagiarism verdict, after the National Council for Attesting University Titles, Diplomas, and Certificates (CNATDCU) rejected his appeal.

CNATDCU has determined that Victor Ponta plagiarized much of his doctoral thesis on international law, based on which he got his Doctor of Law title from the Bucharest University in 2003.

The commission recommended, on June 30, that Romania’s Education Ministry should withdraw Ponta’s Doctor of Law degree due to plagiarism. The former Prime Minister challenged the decision but the General Council of CNATDCU rejected his appeal.

CNATDCU will now send the resolution on removing Ponta’s PhD title to the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry will sign an order to cancel the title.
