Parliamentary committee to check Romanian secret service in disinfectants case

24 May 2016

The parliamentary committee that controls the activity of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) started yesterday a control aiming to see how SRI has respected the law during the investigation on local company Hexi Pharma, which sold diluted disinfectants to local hospitals.

The committee will try to determine if SRI has been involved in the criminal investigation against Hexi Pharma and if this case was classified as a national security case.

The General Prosecutor’s office has been running the criminal investigation in the Hexi Pharma diluted disinfectants case. The Constitutional Court forbids the Romanian Intelligence Service to be involved in the criminal prosecution service.

SRI’s possible involvement in this case has been brought up after Hexi Pharma’s owner, Dan Condrea, allegedly died in a car crash, on Sunday evening. The Police are considering several scenarios, including accident, suicide, foul play.

The scenario that the accident was a setup was also taken into account as the investigators need to run a DNA test to determine if the disfigured body was really Dan Condrea.

Since the disinfectant case broke into the Romanian media there has been speculation that the Hexi Pharma diluted disinfectant business had been “protected” by some secret service. Moreover, after Condrea’s reported death, deputy Sebastian Ghita claimed that a SRI team had been following Condrea and asked SRI to release the stakeout report and film.
