Painting by Romanian Adrian Ghenie sells for USD 4.5 mln in Sotheby’s auction
Romanian artist Adrian Ghenie’s Sunflowers painting sold for GBP 3.1 million (USD 4.5 million) in a Sotheby’s auction in London, on Wednesday, February 10.
The young Romanian painter thus doubled his previous record. Eight bidders competed for Ghenie’s van Gogh-inspired flaming Sunflowers, according to Sotheby’s.
In June 2014, Ghenie’s painting The Fake Rothko sold for GBP 1.43 million (USD 2.43 mln).
Adrian Ghenie, 38, was born in Baia Mare, a city in northern Romania. He has graduated from the Art and Design University of Cluj-Napoca, and now lives and works in Cluj-Napoca, Berlin, and London.
He is one of the most appreciated artists of his generation.
