One in ten Romanians is depressed

19 September 2014

More than 2 million Romanians are suffering from depression, while worldwide the number of depressed people is over 350 million, according to a report from the World Health Organization.

The triggers for the disease are different nowadays than they were a few decades ago, with economic difficulties, unemployment, disasters and military conflicts among the factors adding to depression risk. In Romania, youths are also facing a higher divorce rate and the effects of their parent living and working abroad, which makes them more depressed than previous generations.

They are also facing pressure to match the demands of the consumer society, to wear designer clothes, to own smartphones, things that a few decades ago didn’t even exist, according to psychologist Mihaela Sarbu.
