Romania had over 815,000 people over 80 in 2015 up from 439,000 in 2005. Moreover, the share of people over 80 in the total population increased from 2.1% in 2005 to 4.1% in 2015, according to data released by the European statistical office Eurostat.

The life expectancy of people who reach the age of 80 in Romania recorded the highest increase in the European Union between 2004 and 2014. Thus, life expectancy at the age of 80 is now 7.6 years up from 5.7 years in 2004.

However, Romania still has the second-lowest life expectancy at 80 in Europe, after Bulgaria, where people who reach the age of 80 expect to live, on average, 7 years.

The average life expectancy at 80 in the EU was 9.5 years, in 2014. France, Spain, Luxembourg, and Italy had the highest numbers. Italy, Spain, and France, together with Greece, also have the highest shares of people over 80 in their overall populations.
