No submarine electric cable between Romania and Turkey

26 August 2016

The submarine electric cable between Romania and Turkey will not be introduced in Romania’s new energy strategy, said Corina Popescu, secretary of state within the Energy Ministry.

She argued that Turkey has no interest in this project, and it won’t allocate any money to finance it, reports local Hotnews.ro. Romania’s new energy strategy will be completed by October.

In December 2013, the former Government approved a memorandum on a submarine cable between Romania and Turkey that was supposed to allow Romania to export electricity to Turkey. Constantin Nita, the former minister delegate for energy, asked several state-owned energy companies to contribute EUR 2 million for setting up the project company.

The investment fund Fondul Proprietatea, which had minority stakes in many of those companies, opposed the project arguing that the Turkish partner hadn’t taken on any legal responsibility.
