New strategy aims to turn Bucharest into a pet-friendly city

03 January 2017

The Bucharest City Hall has launched in public debate a strategy for animal protection and welfare aimed at turning the Romanian capital into a pet-friendly city.

Although the budget for this project hasn’t been set yet, the strategy includes more playgrounds for dogs, a pet hotel, and an emergency medical service for animals, reports local Digi24.

One of the project’s main objectives is to prevent animal abandonment, which is a big problem, especially in Bucharest where hundreds of animals are left on the streets every year. This would be done by distributing leaflets in schools, kindergartens, public institutions, and associations.

Moreover, the role of the Authority for Supervision and Protection of Animals would be reconsidered, and the dogcatchers would learn how to catch the animals without abusing them. Moreover, the dog shelters would be turned into adoption centers, and the animals would be used for various activities.

The strategy also includes the establishment of an animal farm just outside the city, as well as a research center and a pet hotel where the owners can leave their companions when they leave the city. More playgrounds for dogs are also to be set up in Bucharest if the project is approved.

Moreover, a mobile veterinary service of intervention made up of specialists from the University of Veterinary Medicine would be in charge of medical emergencies.
