Bucharest could be the home of a new highrise office building, if and when a newly planned 17-storey building close to Unirii Square is completed. The project, started by C & I Building, controlled by Belgian investor Yves Weerts, together with Costel and Ionut Casuneanu, sons of Costel Casuneanu, a well known local businessman who runs a construction company.
The developer recently received the green light from the Third District city hall for the 18,700 sqm building. The building will be called Unirii View and be the third tallest highrise in Bucharest, after the Sky Tower and Tower Center International.
The site of the new building is already being prepared for construction work. A 2,000 sqm park, which had been built by the City hall on a privately owned land, was closed down to make room for the new building.
Costel Casuneanu is a Romanian businessman who owns the construction company PA&CO International, which has landed various contracts with the Romanian state for road work and road maintenance. Earlier in 2012, Casuneanu was convicted to four years in jail with parole under surveillance for trading influence. More about it here.
