Negotiations for building reactors 3 and 4 in Romania, “at the eleventh hour”

20 October 2016

The Romanian state’s negotiations with Chinese group China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) to build the reactors 3 and 4 of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant are "at the eleventh hour," said Daniela Lulache, general manager of the nuclear power producer Nuclearelectrica.

The aspects that are still discussed include the role of the Romanian state in this project, she added.

“We have another round of consultations with various state institutions and we needed a little more time,” Lulache said, reports local Agerpres.

The Extraordinary General Shareholders Meeting of Nuclearelectrica, which took place on Monday, approved extending the deadline to finalize the negotiations until December 20. Lulache said that she hoped that consultations would be done by then.

On November 9 last year representatives of Nuclearelectrica and China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) signed the Memorandum on the construction of the reactors 3 and 4 of the Cernavoda plant.

Romania’s Energy Ministry recently announced that it would not abandon this project, which has been included in the country’s energy strategy, as the investments already made in this project are significant.
