Naturalized wrestler brings Romania its fifth medal at the Rio Olympics

Albert Saritov, a naturalized Romanian of Chechen descent, has won the bronze medal in the men’s freestyle wrestling competition - 97 kg category at the Rio Olympics. Saritov beat Georgia’s Elizbar Odikadze in the bronze medal match on Sunday, August 21.

Saritov is the first naturalized athlete who has won an Olympic medal for Romania. He brought the total number of medals Romania has won at the Rio Olympics to five.

Romanian athletes return from Rio with one gold medal, brought by the women’s epee team, one silver, won by tennis players Horia Tecau and Florin Mergea, and three bronze medals (for the 8+1 women’s rowing crew, by weightlifter Gabriel Sincraian, and by freestyle wrestler Albert Saritov).

Romania thus finished 47th in the country ranking based on the number of medals at the Rio Olympics.
