Romanian miners end 300 km protest march, go to Govt. for talks

18 April 2016

The 60 miners who went on a protest march last Monday have finally arrived in Bucharest this morning. They’ve walked around 320 km from Targu Jiu to the Romanian capital, to protest against the bad situation at energy producer Complexul Energetic Oltenia, where they work.

Other miners joined them as they reached Bucharest and about 300 of them went to the Government for talks with Deputy Prime Minister Costin Borc.

The miners have asked the Government to save Complexul Energetic Oltenia, which is in a difficult financial situation after two years of losses, and stop the announced 2,000 layoffs announced at the company. They are also unhappy with the low electricity price, which doesn't cover the company's production costs.

Complexul Energetic Hunedoara, the other large thermal electricity producer, is in a worse situation. The company entered insolvency earlier this year.
