MEP: Romania could have 110 ministers and state secretaries

20 January 2017

Romania’s new Government could have around 110 ministers and state secretaries, the highest number in the EU, according to Romanian MEP Siegfried Muresan, member of The People's Movement Party (PMP) led by former president Traian Basescu.

Romania already ranks first for the highest number of ministers, with 28 ministers plus one Prime Minister, but also for the number of state secretaries. For example, the Ministry of Regional Development has six state secretaries, Siegfried Muresan said.

France, by comparison, has 17 ministries plus the prime minister, as well as 21 state secretaries - 39 high officials in total. Germany, whose population is four times bigger than Romania’s, has 15 ministers, plus the federal chancellor, four state ministers and 55 state secretaries. This means 75 high officials in total, Muresan added.

The new Government sets up new offices for ministers and state secretaries to satisfy clientele groups, the MEP wrote on Facebook.
