Man dies after blast at Romania’s Petromidia refinery

A man has died after a blast at the Petromidia refinery in eastern Romania. Three other workers who have been wounded in the fire are treated in Bucharest hospitals.

A blast followed by a fire occurred on Monday, evening, August 22, on the Petromidia petrochemical platform near Constanta. Two nitrogen tanks and a petrol pump exploded and the blast was followed by a strong fire, according to the Department for Emergency Situations (DSU). The 112 call came shortly after 6 pm yesterday.

Four workers on the petrochemical platform were injured. One of the four injured had burns on 100% of his body and a very slim chance of survival. The man was transferred to the Bagdasar-Arseni hospital in Bucharest by helicopter but he died during the night, the hospital’s representatives announced.

The other injured were transported to Bucharest too.

Petromidia (Rompetrol Rafinare) is the largest Romanian oil refinery. The company’s majority shareholder is the Kazakh group KMG International while the Romanian state has a 44,69% stake in the company. The refinery is located in Navodari, near the famous Black Sea resort of Mamaia.

The blast has affected the refinery’s operations, as the installation where the fire occurred has been shut down.
