Less than 100 people hold 2% of all savings in Romanian banks

Some 94 people had deposits of over RON 10 million (EUR 2.2 million) in Romanian banks. They held about 2% of all individual deposits in Romania, which amounted to RON 130.4 billion (EUR 29 billion) at the end of 2015.

By comparison, two thirds (66%) of the individuals with bank deposits had less than RON 1,000 in their accounts and held only 1% of all the savings in Romanian banks, according to a presentation by Florin Georgescu, first deputy governor of Romania’s National Bank (BNR).

Romanians had 14.4 million bank accounts at the end of last year. Some 4% of these clients had over RON 50,000 (EUR 11,000) in their accounts and held over two-thirds (67%) of the total value of bank deposits.

The 2% who had deposits of over RON 100,000 (EUR 22,200) held 51% of all savings, and the 0.1% with deposits of over RON 500,000 (EUR 111,000) held 13.6% of the total savings.
