Law proposal in Romania: Ballot papers to also include candidates’ photos

26 September 2016

A Romanian MP would want the ballot papers also to include the candidates' photos to avoid any confusion at the elections. This way, the Romanians will know the candidates better, and will know exactly whom to vote, the bill's initiator believes.

However, if the bill enters into force, printing the ballots could cost twice as much.

The Senate will vote the MP’s law proposal this week, reports local Digi24. However, the Chamber of Deputies will also have to vote it.

It happened before that some Romanian voters didn’t know exactly whom to vote for, as several candidates had similar names, or even exactly the same names. For example, at the local elections organised in Romania in early-June this year, the residents of Draguseni, a village in Suceava county, had to choose between three candidates named Vasile Cepoi.

Four years ago, the residents of Bucharest's District 3 had to choose between Robert Negoita and Liviu Negoita.

Romania will organize parliamentary elections on December 11. More than 18.9 million Romanians with voting rights are enrolled in the Electoral Register, including those who will turn 18 on the day of the parliamentary elections.
