More Romanians pay their taxes after "shame list" published

22 July 2016

The Romanian tax agency’s decision to publishing the list of large debtors to the state budget has determined more people to pay their overdue taxes.

The number of debtors reduced by half in the month when the list was published, said the tax agency ANAF president Dragos Doros. “The effect was visible as we managed to significantly reduce that list in just one month,” Doros said, according to Agerpres.

ANAF inspectors have tried to get in contact with the debtors, in some cases, whereas in other cases the taxpayers with large debts have themselves contacted ANAF to clarify their situation. “We initially had 185,000 positions, but as we got closer to publishing the list, the number halved,” said Doros.

According to the list ANAF published in mid-May, there were over 187,000 taxpayers with overdue tax debts higher than RON 1,500 (EUR 334) at the end of March. Their total liabilities amounted to EUR 757 million.

ANAF also published a list of 145,000 small companies and public institutions with overdue tax debt. Their total liabilities were over EUR 17 billion, 80% of which was irrecoverable.

Over 2,600 big companies in Romania also had EUR 1.4 bln overdue taxes
