Jazz legend Chick Corea comes to Romania for Timisoara Jazz Festival

21 February 2017

The Chick Corea Elektric Band, led by jazz legend Chick Corea, will perform in Romania at the Timisoara Jazz Festival, the organizers of the event announced. The festival takes place between June 30 and July 2.

Pianist and composer Chick Corea, a 22-time Grammy winner, heads the quintet, which reunited in 2016, for his 75th birthday. The quintet includes drummer Dave Weckl, bassist John Patitucci, saxophonist Eric Marienthal, and guitarist Frank Gambale. The jazz fusion quintet was established in 1985 and released their self-titled debut album in 1986. The Elektric Band quickly became the top electric jazz unit of the era with numerous world tours and eight collective albums through the most recent one, the 2004 To the Stars.

A DownBeat Hall of Famer and NEA Jazz Master, Chick Corea is the fourth-most-nominated artist in the history of the Grammys, with 63 nominations. He also earned 3 Latin Grammy Awards, the most of any artist in the Best Instrumental Album category. His musical style ranges from straight ahead to avant-garde, bebop to fusion, children's songs to chamber music, along with some far-reaching forays into symphonic works.

The Timisoara Jazz Festival is at its fifth edition this year. The festival will have three open-air stages in Victoriei Square, the Castle Park, and the Civic Park. Access to the events is free. The program of the event is being updated here.

Previous editions of the event have lined up performers such as Richard Bona, Kurt Elling, David Murray and Macy Gray, Terri Lyne Carrington / Lizz Wright, Al Jarreau, The Cat Empire, Anoushka Shankar, Dianne Reeves, Liv Warfield w/ Prince's NPG Hornz, The Ruff Pack, Marcus Miller, DeeDee Bridgewater, Dhafer Youssef, Imany, Jacob Collier or BadBadNotGood, many of them for the first time in Romania.
