Implementation of food waste law in Romania, postponed

25 May 2017

The Government has decided to postpone the implementation of the food waste law, because if the law were to be applied in its current form, it would encourage the creation of a parallel trade that is hard to control, said yesterday the agriculture minister Petre Daea, reports local Incont.stirileprotv.ro.

“Unfortunately, there are some provisions that need to be improved.”

The minister said that parallel networks could acquire food products with 3% of their value and then sell them with 25% at a certain date.

“There are things that can get out of hand," he added.

The food waste law should have been applied starting last Sunday. The law provides that retailers and producers that fail to sell food products three days before their expiration are obliged to donate them to non-profit organizations or to city halls to support poor families, or to sell them to social enterprises at 3% of their acquisition or production cost. Social enterprises or foundations are allowed to further sell them at 25% of the initial price plus VAT.
