Igor Dodon removes former Romanian President’s citizenship

04 January 2017

Igor Dodon, the President of the Republic of Moldova, signed yesterday the decree to remove the Moldovan citizenship of former Romanian President Traian Basescu.

Dodon wrote about this on his Facebook page. He argued that the citizenship was “illegally” granted to Basescu, because the former Romanian President repeatedly urged for the “liquidation of the statehood of the Republic of Moldova by annexation to Romania”.

However, he didn’t remove the citizenship of Maria Basescu, the former Romanian president's wife.

Basescu said that he found out about Dodon’s decision in the media, and that such a decision shows that Dodon is afraid of him.

Traian Basescu and his wife, asked for the Moldovan citizenship in March 8, and received the citizenship three months later, in early June.
