How big are the environmental taxes in Romania?

Romania collected EUR 3.64 billion from environmental taxes, in 2014. The sum represented 8.8% of the state’s revenues in that year, which is one of the highest shares in the European Union (EU), according to data presented by the European statistics office Eurostat.

Romania’s revenues from environmental taxes went up 2.7 times from 2004 to 2014, from EUR 1.435 billion.

The biggest environment taxes were collected in the energy sector, representing some 88.9% of the total. The taxes on transport had a share of 10.8% while the taxes on resources stood for only 0.3% of the total amount.

In the EU, the environmental taxes totaled EUR 343.6 billion and represented 6.3% of the member states’ total tax revenues, in 2014.

With a share above 10%, Slovenia (10.6%), Croatia (10.5%), and Greece (10.2%) were in 2014 the member states where environmental taxes had the greatest relative importance. Belgium and France (both 4.5%) recorded the lowest shares of environmental taxes in the total budget revenues.
