Heavy rain floods streets, railway station, affects subway traffic in Bucharest

29 June 2016

A short heavy rain flooded several streets in Bucharest and the city’s main train station Gara de Nord on Wednesday afternoon, June 29. In less than an hour the rainfall reached 15-20 liters per sqm in Bucharest’s northern and western areas, and even more in some places.

The area around the Gara de Nord train station was the most affected, with the water level on some streets reaching 30 centimeters, as the sewage system couldn’t take in all the water. The traffic lights stopped working in the area.

Moreover, the water infiltrated through the train station’s roof and caused a short circuit at an electric transformer the station without electricity, according to local Digi24.

The subway traffic was also impacted as water infiltrated into the subway tunnel between Gara de Nord and Victoriei stations. The metro trains didn’t circulate between the two stations for about two hours.
