Gross minimum wage increases to RON 1,250 in Romania

The gross minimum wage in Romania went up to RON 1,250 (EUR 280) starting May 1, following a Government decision earlier this year. About 1.1 million Romanians who earn the minimum wage benefit from this measure.

The minimum salary was previously RON 1,050 (EUR 234).

The employees will get RON 141 (EUR 31.6) added to their net salary, which will reach RON 917 (EUR 206), and the remaining RON 59 (EUR 13.2) will go to the state as taxes.

KPMG made a study about the minimum salaries in 31 countries in Europe. According to the results, about 22 of them have mandatory minimum wages. In countries such as UK, however, the minimum salary is based on several criteria such as age or sector.

Luxembourg records the biggest minimum salary, with EUR 1,923 whereas Bulgaria has the lowest minimum wage, namely EUR 214.
