Grain reaches a third of the total freight traffic in Romania’s ports

The port of Constanta, Romania’s largest port, recorded a record grain traffic last year, namely 20.4 million tons, exceeding the record of 19.6 million tons in 2015.

The total freight traffic through Romania’s ports of Constanta, Midia, and Mangalia amounted to 59.5 million tons last year, up 5.5% compared to 2015, reports local Agerpres. This means that the grain traffic accounted for about a third (34.3%) of the total freight traffic through Romania’s sea ports.

The volumes of fertilizers and oil seeds that passed through the sea ports also increased significantly last year. Fertilizer volumes went up by 58%, to 2.92 million tons and oil seed volumes were 49% higher, at 2.91 million tons. Crude oil accounted for 12.6% of the total traffic whereas the petroleum products generated 9.5%.

The maritime traffic amounted to 46.19 million tons whereas the river traffic represented 13.23 million tons. The sea traffic increased by 6% year-on-year whereas the river traffic rose by 3.9%.

In 2016, over 14,500 vessels entered the Romanian ports.
