GfK study: Romanians are the biggest shopping fans in the region

23 February 2017

East-Europeans like to go shopping, with the Romanians ranking first, as nine in ten shoppers in the country like this activity, according to a GfK study.

In Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Austria, seven in ten people find shopping fun, the share going down to about 50% in Bulgaria.

However, 35% of the shoppers in Romania feel pressured by time when they do their daily shopping. This could be influenced by the underdevelopment of the modern proximity trade, compared to Austria for example, according to GfK.

When it comes to shopping lists, seven in ten Bulgarians have one when they do their shopping, the share being lower in Romania, where only about half of the shoppers make such lists. Moreover, their number is on a downtrend in Romania.

The study also shows that most of Bulgarian and Romanian shoppers manage to stay within the planed budget when they are doing their daily shopping. On the other hand, only 36% of Czechs and 37% of Austrians manage to respect a budget.

In Romania, 89% of shoppers like to buy everything they need from one place, but 72% would go to other stores as well if that would help them save some money. By comparison, 74% of Bulgarians like to buy everything from one place, and only 35% would go to other stores as well if that would help them get a lower price or better offers.

The GfK panel for households is based on information obtained by continuous monitoring of household consumption in Romania, for all categories of consumer products, on a sample of 3,000 households.
