German airline airberlin gave up on its Bucharest – Vienna flight operated by partner company FlyNiki and has instead introduced a Bucharest – Berlin flight. The new route will be inaugurated on January 28 this year and will operate flights on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until March 15. After mid-March, Friday and week-end flights will also be introduced.
Flights can already be booked on the airberlin website starting at EUR 49 one way per person. A flight connecting Berlin and Bulgarian capital Sofia will also be introduced.
With 33 million passengers, airberlin is the second largest airline in Germany. For passenger numbers the airberlin group is in sixth place amongst European carriers. Alongside airberlin, the airberlin group has stakes in the Austrian airline NIKI (49.9 percent), the Swiss airline Belair (49 percent) and airberlin technik GmbH (100 percent). In early 2004, airberlin took over 24 percent of NIKI Luftfahrt GmbH. In February 2010, airberlin increased its share in NIKI to 49.9 percent. The airline was founded by the Austrian Formula 1 world champion Niki Lauda. Niki started operating flights to and from Romania in 2010.
