Former President launches TV presenter in the race for Bucharest

25 April 2016

Former President Traian Basescu’s Popular Movement Party (PMP) will support Robert Turcescu for the Bucharest mayor seat.

Basescu would have entered the competition himself but changed his mind after the General Prosecutor’s office informed him that he was a suspect in a tax evasion and money laundering case.

“If I hadn’t become a suspect just days before the campaign started, I surely would have run for mayor,” Basescu said.

He added that he would get involved in the local elections campaign to help his party get a good result.

Robert Turcescu, 40, is a Romanian journalist and TV presenter, best known as a talk-show host at Realitatea TV, and then at B1 TV. He is also known for confessing in 2014 to being an undercover agent of a military secret service in Romania while posing as a freelance journalist for several years.
