Foreign direct investment in Romania sees record level of the last eight years

Foreign companies carried out direct investment in Romania worth EUR 3.9 billion in the first eleven months of 2016, up 22% over the same period last year.

It represents a record level of the last eight years, according to data from Romania’s National Bank (BNR). By comparison, foreign direct investment reached EUR 3.2 billion in the first eleven months of 2015.

The equity investments, including the reinvested profits, totaled around EUR 3 billion while the intra-group loans reached EUR 839 million.

In 2015, foreign direct investment reached EUR 3.46 billion. It was a record level after 2009, when the foreign direct investment in Romania reached EUR 3.49 billion. The maximum historic level was recorded in 2008, when foreign companies invested EUR 9.5 billion in Romania.

Foreign direct investment is considered the most beneficial investment by foreign companies in the economy because it is made long-term and usually has positive effects on wages.
