Famous Romanian directors compete at this year's Cannes film festival

14 April 2016

The Cannes film festival has just unveiled the official selection for this year’s edition, which will take place between May 11 and May 22.

Two Romanian films have made in the festival's main competition, namely Cristian Mungiu’s Bacalaureat, and Cristi Puiu’s Sieranevada. Moreover, Bogdan Mirica’s Dogs (Caini) was selected in the Un Certain Regard category.

Cristian Mungiu is one of the best-known Romanian directors, both at home and abroad. In 2007, he won the Palm D’or award for his film 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (4 luni, 3 saptamani si doua zile), opening way for the new wave of Romanian directors to international recognition. His 2012 film Beyond the Hills (Dupa Dealuri) was also screened in the competition of that year’s Cannes Film Festival. In 2013, he was selected as a member of the Cannes festival’s main competition jury.

Bacalaureat is the first movie Mungiu directed after Dupa Dealuri (2012). The film talks about the responsibilities of parenthood.

Cristi Puiu is a Romanian director best known for his 2005 dark comedy The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (Moartea Domnului Lazarescu). The movie got the Un Certain Regard prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2005.

Two other Romanians will be at festival this year. Catalin Rotaru and Gabi Virginia Sarga were selected in the Short Films Competition with 4:15 PM. The End of the World (4.15 PM. Sfarsitul Lumii). Nine other short films were selected in this competition.
