Expat politician wants fewer MPs in Romania

21 June 2016

The Save Bucharest Union (USB) has asked for a cut in the number of MPs and an increase in the number of their work hours.

“We demand a reduction in the number of MPs to maximum 300, of which 100 for the Senate and 200 for the Chamber of Deputies,” Clotilde Armand wrote on her Facebook page.

“We ask for the MPs to effectively work eight hours per day, five days a week.”

She added that the MPs should have a holiday of maximum five weeks per year, like the rest of the employees in Romania. She argued that the US has 535 MPs at a population of over 300 million, whereas Romania has 588 MPs for 20 million people.

In Romania, the legislative process was taken over by Government who issued 1,548 emergency ordinances between 2003 and 2014. This means an emergency ordinance every 2.5 days, Armand explained.

Clotilde Armand ran for the mayor's office of Bucharest’s District 1 with the support of USB. She narrowly lost and asked for a recount, but her request was rejected.

The Save Bucharest Union, led by Romanian activist Nicusor Dan, has emerged as the second most important political party in Bucharest after the local elections. Dan announced he planned to take his party to a national level and turn it into Save Romania Union.
