European Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Cretu said yesterday that Romania has access to EUR 400 million for its healthcare sector. Of the total amount, some EUR 150 million are for the construction of three regional hospitals.

In addition, the country has access to EUR 250 million for which there aren’t any projects.

“I will discuss tomorrow (Thursday) with the minister of health to modernize 280 hospitals and health units for which there aren’t any projects,” Cretu said.

Asked if the money would be lost if there weren’t any projects, Cretu replied: “I will inform myself tomorrow. I understand that there are some modernization projects. (...) I invite all the healthcare units that consider that they need upgrade, there is still money available,” the European Commissioner said.

As for the three regional hospitals, she said that their construction will begin in 2018.
