Telling jokes in a second language is a perilous undertaking and most who have tried have probably experienced blank looks of incomprehension or, worse still, caused offense when jokes are taken the wrong way. But help is now available for the would be comedian running up against a big language and culture barrier.
A new English Romanian joke book promises help get a laugh and develop language skills along the way. “Carte de Glume Versiune Bilingva is an excellent way for Romanian people to practice their English – and for foreigners who are trying to learn Romanian,” says the book’s author Jeremy Taylor (in picture). As well as being an opportunity for practicing reading and speaking, jokes are short and memorable and provide a great way of learning interesting new vocabulary and expressions, according to the author.
Jeremy Taylor hails from Bristol, England and is a writer and teacher trainer. His hobbies and interests include cycling touring, photography, travel and all things food and cooking. However, he considers juggling to be his favorite pastime. He has also produced bilingual joke books in other languages and currently lives in the Czech Republic.
