EC president Junker prefers Corina Cretu for Regional Policy European Commissioner mandate

Romanian MEP Corina Cretu was confirmed by the president of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker as Romania’s proposal for European Commissioner, and will most likely get the Regional Policy portfolio, according to market sources quoted by Gandul. Cretu was chosen from two candidates sent in by Romania; the other one was the incumbent European Commissioner for Agriculture, Dacian Ciolos. Cretu, who is also vice-president of the European Parliament, will most likely run the cohesion policy and European funding for regional development across the EU. However, the Romanian media still poses questions over Cretu’s economic experience: she graduated economic studies, but her sole experience was for three years at a factory. She went on to become journalist, than spokesperson for former president Ion Iliescu, then a senator and a MEP. Should Cretu be also officially accepted, she will be heard in a local commission. If successful, Cretu will replace Austrian Johannes Hahn, who now holds the Regional Policy portfolio. editor@romania-insider.com
