Discover Bucharest: Large cinemas in Romania’s capital

Who doesn’t like to see a good film from once in a while? Well, with the technology advancing so fast these days, seeing a movie can become quite an experience with the 3D and 4D technologies.

If you are in Bucharest and you want to go out for a movie, Romania’s capital hosts a large number of cinemas, from big multiplexes in the shopping malls to small street locations in the city center. The films are usually screened in the original language, with Romanian subtitles.

Here’s a list of some of the largest cinemas in Bucharest.

Cinema City opened earlier this year the cinema in Mega Mall, Bucharest’s newest shopping center. It comprises 14 digital cinema halls, including a 4Dx auditorium which has high-tech motion seats and special effects such as wind, fog, lightning, bubbles, water, rain and scents. Located on Pierre de Coubertin street, the Cinema City in Mega Mall offers a total of 2366 seats. It stays open between 11:30 and 23:00 from Monday to Friday, and between 10:30 and 23:00 during weekends. Tickets cost between RON 18 and RON 46, depending on the time of the week and the type of cinema hall. Children, students, and pensioners can purchase tickets with different discounts.

The Cinema City in AFI Palace Cotroceni shopping mall comprises 21 halls with 4,322 seats, including an IMAX screen. The cinema was opened in 2009 and is located on Vasile Milea Blvd. It is open between 11:30 and 23:00 from Monday to Friday, and between 10:30 and 23:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets cost between RON 18 and RON 37, with discounts for children, students, and pensioners.

The Cinema City in Sun Plaza shopping mall (located on Calea Vacaresti street) was opened in 2010 and comprises 15 halls with 2,823 seats. Tickets cost between RON 21.5 and RON 33.

You can also find Cinema City movie theaters in Arad, Bacau, Baia Mare, Braila, Cluj, Constanta, Iasi, Pitesti, Ploiesti, Tragu Jiu, Targu Mures, and Timisoara.

Grand Cinema & More is the only cinema in northern Bucharest. Located inside Baneasa Shopping City mall, the cinema has 13 halls with a total of 2,600 seats. The cinema’s Grand Ultra auditorium has the largest screen in Romania – 22 meters wide, and a capacity of 480 seats, according to information on the cinema’s website. This auditorium also has the Dolby Atmos audio system. For those who want a more special treatment, the cinema also includes the Grand VIP Studios, which comes with a modern design and more facilities. Besides movie screenings, the location also hosts other events such as live shows screenings, conferences, and stand-up comedy shows. Tickets cost between RON 18 and RON 29, depending on the time of day. In the Grand VIP Studios, tickets cost between RON 70 and RON 95.

Located inside Plaza Romania mall in Bucharest, Movieplex comprises 11 halls with more than 2,500 seats, including special seats for people with disabilities. Located on Timisoara Blvd., the cinema uses the Dolby Digital Surround sound system. It stays open daily between 10:00 and 23:00. Tickets cost between RON 20 and RON 45.

Hollywood Multiplex cinema in Bucuresti Mall has 10 screens and a total of 2,125 seats. Some of its cinema halls have 4K and 3D RealD technologies. Moreover, Hollywood Multiplex uses three audio formats, namely Dolby Digital, Dolby SR (spectral recording), and DTS (Digital Theatre System). Tickets cost between RON 17 and RON 33, depending on the type of screen and the day. Located on Calea Vitan street, the cinema is open daily between 10:00 and 23:00.

The Light Cinema is located inside Liberty Center shopping mall in Bucharest, and has seven halls with 1,100 seats. It was opened in October 2008 and, besides movies, it also screens live opera shows and concerts. You can find it at the second floor of Liberty Center, on Progresului street.

The Cine Grand cinema in Auchan Titan shopping center is another large location in Romania’s capital. It comprises seven 2D and 3D screens, with a capacity of 950 places. It is located on 1 Decembrie 1918 Blvd. in Bucharest. Cine Grand Network entered the Romanian market in 2013 when it opened its first cinema in Botosani, a city in Northern Romania. It runs a total of two cinemas on the local market.

Besides these large cinemas, Bucharest is also home to other smaller street cinemas, such as CinemaPRO, Glendale Studio, Patria, Studio, Scala, and Elvira Popescu.

Glendale Studio is located on Soseaua Cotroceni street. It stays open between 10:00 and 13:00 and 17:00 and 23:00 from Monday to Friday, and between 15:00 and 23:00 on weekends.

CinemaPRO is located near Universitatii Square in Bucharest. Opened in 2005, the cinema has a capacity of 540 seats. Tickets cost between RON 14 and RON 24. Address:  3, Ion Ghica street. Together with Cinema PRO, Patria, Studio, and Scala cinemas, all located on Magheru Blvd in downtown Bucharest, are among the best-known street movie theaters in Bucharest.

Elvira Popescu cinema is another street cinema in Bucharest, which mostly hosts independent and art movie screenings. A ticket costs RON 15 for adults, and RON 10 for students and pensioners.
