Counties in Transylvania record the fastest economic growth in Romania

The counties of Maramures, Cluj and Alba, all located in the Transylvania historical region, recorded the highest economic growth rates in Romania last year, according to data of the National Prognosis Commission (CNP) quoted by Profit.ro.

The Romanian economy registered an increase of 4.8% in 2016, according to preliminary data published by the National Statistics Institute (INS). Romania's gross domestic product amounted to EUR 169.6 billion, which corresponded to a level of about EUR 8,600 per inhabitant.

The counties saw large differences in terms of GDP evolution, according to the CNP data.

The counties of Maramures, Cluj and Alba had economic growth rates of 6.2%, 6%, respectively 5.8% in 2016. They were followed by Harghita county, with a GDP growth of 5.7% in 2016 and the counties of Bacau, Iasi, Caras-Severin and Covasna, all with an economic growth of 5.5%. These were the only counties where economic growth exceeded 5.5% last year.

Bucharest’s GDP grew last year by 5.4%, above the national average.
