Construction work, down 13% in Romania in November

Construction work recorded a drop of 13.3% in November 2016 compared to the same month in 2015, as a gross series, affected by the decline in infrastructure work.

However, the construction of residential buildings significantly increased during this period, according to data published on Friday by the National Statistics Institute (INS).

Residential work increased by 78% compared to November 2015 whereas the work on non-residential buildings went up by 17.9%. The engineering work dropped by 37.4%.

In the first eleven months of 2016, construction work declined by 0.9% compared to the same period of 2015, as a gross series. Residential was up 13.5% year-on-year, non-residential increased by 2.3%, but engineering work (infrastructure) was down 5.8%.

In 2015, construction works increased by 10.4% year-on-year. The number of completed homes reached over 47,000, up 10.4% compared to 2014, after six consecutive years of decline. The number remained significantly lower compared to the level before the crisis. In 2008, the peak year for construction in Romania, some 64,400 homes were completed.
