03 May 2016

Some 2,672 big and medium companies in Romania have outstanding tax liabilities totaling over EUR 1.43 billion, according to the National Fiscal Administration Agency – ANAF. The sum represents some 3.2% of the state’s yearly revenues, which amounted to over EUR 44 billion in 2015.

The actual unpaid debt to the state budget, social insurance budget, and public healthcare insurance budget totaled EUR 1.06 billion, and the remaining EUR 370 million were penalties. The companies have contested some EUR 163 million worth of taxes.

The tax agency published the lists of big and medium companies that had significant outstanding tax debt at the end of March this year. ANAF was also supposed to publish the individual debtors’ list on May 3, but postponed it for a few days to allow interested taxpayers to settle their debts, according to the agency’s announcement.

About 186 big companies had outstanding fiscal liabilities of over RON 100,000 (EUR 22,000) at the end of March. Their cumulated debt was some EUR 580 million, according to ANAF.

Another 2,486 medium companies had overdue tax debt in excess of RON 50,000 (EUR 11,000). The total sum in this case was EUR 848 million.
